Hemorrhoid Treatment and Education Q&A
What is the THD procedure and when is it needed?
Transanal Hemorrhoidal Dearterialization (THD) is a minimally invasive treatment for hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoids develop when veins in the rectum become swollen due to pressure, straining, or chronic constipation. THD is typically recommended for patients with symptomatic internal or external hemorrhoids that have not responded to lifestyle changes or medication.
What are the symptoms of internal hemorrhoids?
Common symptoms include painless rectal bleeding during bowel movements, itching, swelling, or a feeling of incomplete evacuation. In more advanced cases, hemorrhoids may prolapse (bulge out of the anus), causing discomfort and hygiene challenges.
How is it diagnosed and treated?
Diagnosis is made through a physical exam and anoscopy. During the THD procedure, Dr. Marcus uses a Doppler ultrasound probe to locate and tie off the arteries supplying the hemorrhoids, reducing blood flow and shrinking the tissue. The procedure is minimally invasive, requires zero cutting or removal of tissue, and is performed under anesthesia.
What is recovery like after the THD procedure?
Recovery is generally quicker and less painful than with traditional hemorrhoid surgery. Most patients resume normal activities within a few days and experience significant relief from symptoms with minimal discomfort.
